Frank Stanford: "YOU" - Ansel Elkins reads "The Picture Show Next Door to the Stamp Store..."

See Ansel Elkins read “The Picture Show Next Door to the Stamp Store in Downtown Memphis,” a poem from Frank Stanford’s first volume of poetry, The Singing Knives, originally published in 1971 by Mill Mountain Press. The reading is taken from an interview she conducted with the filmmakers for the documentary Frank Stanford: “YOU”.

Ansel Elkins is the author of Blue Yodel, winner of the 2014 Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize. Her poems have appeared in The American Scholar, The Believer, Oxford American, Parnassus, Virginia Quarterly Review, and elsewhere. She has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the North Carolina Arts Council, the American Antiquarian Society, and Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, as well as a "Discovery"/Boston Review Prize. She is is currently visiting Writer-in-Residence at the University of Kentucky.

Frank Stanford: “YOU" is an upcoming feature-length experimental documentary film on the life and work of poet Frank Stanford.   Stanford is a mythical figure in the world of American Southern poetry. Frank Stanford: ”YOU" explores and demystifies the poet’s life and legacy.   Frank Stanford was born in Richton, Mississippi, but grew up in Memphis, Tennessee and Mountain Home, Arkansas, before attending graduate-level poetry workshops at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville—the same town in which he took his own life.   "YOU" features interviews and readings from Frank Stanford's close friends and family, as well as scholars and admirers.  Frank Stanford: “YOU” is directed by John Burcham Erwin and Produced by Erwin and the poet Z.D. Harrod.
